SCHOOL IN AN ENVELOPE
Low-Cost, Easy-to-Use Teaching Materials
"The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say 'The children are now working as if I didn't exist.'"
- Maria Montessori
In many parts of rural Malawi, there are no schools, or they are too far away for small children to reach via walking. There's also a lack of trained preschool and nursery teachers. Given these circumstances, preschool children need a low-cost, easy-to-use teaching mechanism. This comes in the form of laminated flashcards. The flashcards require very little teaching and are adaptable to the child-to-child learning style inherent to Malawi (older children teaching the younger ones).
We have run a pilot version of this project in approximately 70 preschools since January 2021. 'School in an Envelope' resource packs cost only 2 euros to produce, and the preschool teachers can be trained on a months' worth of numeracy lessons for as little as 7 euros per teacher.
To adapt to COVID, we have set up flashcard libraries at water wells and mills where women and mothers spend their time. These libraries are managed by a preschool nursery volunteer.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
